The same prescription can cost you nothing or $85 depending only on where you hand over the paper. That's the whole game with the TRICARE pharmacy benefit, and most families are leaving money on the counter without knowing it.

The order to think about it in
- Military pharmacy — free. Covered drugs cost $0, up to a 90-day supply. If you live near a military hospital or clinic, this beats everything. The catch is stock: they carry the formulary, not every drug, and hours are limited. Find the closest facility.
- Home delivery — $14 for a 90-day generic. For anything you take every month, this is the clear winner outside a military pharmacy: three months for less than one month at retail, delivered. Set it up once and stop thinking about it.
- Retail network — $16 for a 30-day generic. Right for a new prescription, an antibiotic, anything you need today. More than 41,000 locations.
- Non-network — you pay more, often up front. Worth it only when nothing else is open and you need the drug now.
Run the arithmetic on a maintenance drug and the point makes itself. A generic filled monthly at retail runs $192 a year. The same drug through home delivery is $56. At a military pharmacy it's nothing.
Which chains are in the network
TRICARE confirms only a few by name. As of August 1, 2026: CVS, Walgreens, Kroger, Target are in network; Walmart and Sam's Club are not. For every other chain TRICARE publishes nothing at all, so look the specific store up in the Express Scripts pharmacy locator rather than trusting a list.

This changes, and it has changed recently. Kroger left the TRICARE network on January 1, 2023 and rejoined on February 5, 2025, bringing back more than 2,200 pharmacies across 35 states. Any pharmacy-network page without a date on it is worth nothing — including this one a year from now, which is why we date-stamp and re-check.
What changed on January 1, 2026
Copays went up. A brand-name drug at a retail network pharmacy moved to $48, and non-formulary drugs to $85 at both retail and home delivery. Generics at retail held at $16. Military pharmacies remain $0 — the gap between free and everything else got wider, not narrower.
One change went the other way. Since February 28, 2026, active duty family members enrolled in TRICARE Prime Remote pay no copayments for covered drugs through home delivery or a retail network pharmacy. If that's your household and you're still paying copays, something's wrong — call your regional contractor.

Formulary, non-formulary, and the $85 line
The jump from $48 to $85 is the formulary. TRICARE keeps a list of preferred drugs; anything off it is non-formulary and costs substantially more. Before you accept an $85 copay, ask the prescriber whether a formulary alternative would work — often one does, and the conversation takes a minute. If the non-formulary drug is genuinely medically necessary for you, there's a process to have it covered at the lower rate; your prescriber has to make that case.
A note on independent pharmacies
If your local independent pharmacy has stopped taking TRICARE, you're not imagining a trend — press reporting in July 2026 described thousands of independent pharmacies leaving the network in recent years, and the contract drew Senate scrutiny. We're flagging that as context, not as a TRICARE fact: the reporting is from news outlets, TRICARE's own page still states "more than 41,000 locations," and we're not going to publish a precise count that two sources disagree on. What it means for you practically is: check the locator before assuming a store you've used for years still works.
